Results 2008 Science Olympiads

No one in India plays Hockey nor Kabaddi. It is only a GK ( Rare Knowledge ) question that when or how many times did India win an Olympic Gold in Hockey. Is Kabaddi played in Olympics ?

Can and should urban Indian children know how is Kabaddi played ? ( I do not propose that as I see no reasons to do so ).

Well then what is Indian students good at ?????????????
( Is it only preparing for IIT JEE ? )

Some “ elite / progressive / educated / urban-smart “ parents have designed an “ excuse “ to satisfy / pacify their ego …. By …. Saying ….
“ Indian students now do not play ( no Athletics / parallel bar / Gymnastics etc ) but are good in studies …….. “

?
2008 IBO ( International Biology Olympiad ) was hosted by India at Mumbai. How much coverage by various news papers / news channels did we see regarding this ?
?

The medals in the Science Olympiads are given approximately as per following tradition –

Only 1/3 rd of the total participants get a medal. So if there are total 300 participants then only 100 will get some medal.
The Gold – Silver – Bronze are distributed in ratio of 1 : 2 : 3

So amongst 100 participants getting a medal approx 16 / 17 will get a Gold. 34 will get a Silver medal and 49 / 50 of them approx will get a Bronze medal.

In all the Science Olympiads Chinese students had FANTASTIC performance; with SEVERAL Gold medals. Almost ALL Chinese participants won Gold medals.

1 ) at IMO ( International Mathematics Olympiad ) - At Madrid Spain Indian Team came distant 31 st. ( 6 member Team got 5 Bronze medals ! )
Since 1989 India has been participating in IMO and had hosted it in 1996. Several times at least one Indian participant had got Gold, with Team rank in Single digits.

Most Mathematics teachers ( in general ) I have met are clueless about the standard of the IMO problems. The IMO problems do not match the IIT JEE course / pattern. In India good students are primarily interested in IIT JEE…… so ………..

2 ) at ICO / IChO ( International Chemistry Olympiad ) – At Budapest Hungary, Indian team bagged 3 silver and 1 Bronze medals.

3 ) At IBO ( International Biology Olympiad ) – At Mumbai, Indian team bagged only 1 Gold Medal and 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medals.

4 ) At IPhO ( International Physics Olympiad ) – At Hanoi, Vietnam Indian team bagged 4 Gold medals and 1 Silver. ( 3 rd Rank behind China and Taiwan where all 5 participants got Gold medals )!
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Mumbai/At_physics_olympiad_four_golds_for_India_/articleshow/3300086.cms

The IPhO course / level is very similar to IIT JEE. In past some IIT JEE questions were ditto copied from previous year IPhO questions. So in future also Indian students should do well in IPhO.

5 ) At Asian Physics Olympiad – At Ulaanbaatar Mongolia the std 11 ( Indian ) students did not get any medals. While all 8 Chinese Students got Gold medals.

6 ) International Cyber / informatics…… astronomy ……. Robot Olympiad ……………………
( You search out and you will know )

It needs guts to say … “ The king has no clothes … “.
I have intelligence to understand that ( including me ) we Indians are NOT good at studies ….. nor in anything !

Indian Participation In IPhO IChO IBO and Astronomy Olympiad

Indian participation in IPhO ( International Physics Olympiad )

In the Jamshedpur book fare of 1996, I came across a few books on IMO ( International Mathematics Olympiad ). As I worked and searched more on that, came to know that India has been participating in IMO since 1989, even though IMO started since 1959. This participation was initiated by Prof. J. N. Kapoor ( ex-Prof IIT Kanpur )
[ later settled in Friend’s Colony New-Delhi ]. He propagated the information of IMO relentlessly, wrote many books to popularize Math’s amongst students.
[ You can see the History of IMO at
http://www.unl.edu/amc/e-exams/e9-imo/imohistory.shtml
IMO was started by modifying EOTVOS ]

All this made me curious if any such Olympiad exists for Physics, Chemistry or for Science subjects in general. But could get no answers ! The great knowledgeable people who surrounded me, were clueless about this. I decided to write letters to various International science organizations and libraries, seeking this information.

We had no email or web in those days. As most of my letters written to various places across this world, got replied, I came to know that IPhO ( International Physics Olympiad ) was around since 1967 ! And IChO ( International Chemistry Olympiad ) since 1968. International Biology Olympiad, International Astronomy Olympiad also existed.

My Linear-Intuitive thinking prompted me to contact the Physics professors / Teachers across India. I thought they should be interested and excited about this. I searched out about IAPT ( Indian Association of Physics Teachers) and IPA ( Indian Physics Association ). Became life member of these esteemed organizations, and contacted several members of these organizations, to propagate the details of the IPhO that I had collected.

I had also put up an appeal in IAPT journal requesting anyone else who knows anything about IPhO independently, can contact me so that we can form a team to see Indian participation in this event. Only one professor send me a photocopy of an older ( 2 year older ) appeal that was given by Prof Srinivasan of “ American College “ Madurai.

As I contacted Prof. Srinivasan, he was sorry to tell me that I was the ONLY person to contact him for IPhO after these 2 years of his appeal to form a team etc. He had collected some material on IPhO independently and gave the FULL bunch to me, saying if I can then let me work on this !

I took up the challenge and used all my Managerial / organizational / Team-Building skills to search out the like-minded people. Did get good response from HBCSE, IPA office BARC, some IAPT members etc.

We decided to conduct a trial camp at HBCSE, choose good students and start participating as an observer country. I conducted an exam in Bihar ( Jharkhand state did not exist that time ). From other parts of India, other members selected students for the camp in their own methods.
Later I came to know that other students who were “ chosen “ came only by interview but not by rigorous exams as I did.

All the 5 students whom I had chosen for the camp from Bihar, topped the exams in the camp and were chosen to represent India in 1997.

Subsequently IAPT took up the responsibility of conducting the Initial screening and the National selection exam. Indian Association of Chemistry Teachers ( IACT ) was formed. The Chemistry exams in stages are conducted by this team.

2008 IChO ( 40 th ) – Hungary, Budapest
2009 IChO – UK, Cambridge
2010 IChO – Japan, Tokyo
2011 IChO - Turkey

In 1997 – 98 I had collected a few preparatory material for the IChO. I gave copies to many professors across India and particularly to Prof Savita Ladage at HBCSE ( Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, BARC campus, Mankhurd, Chembur, Mumbai ).

We decided to take part in IChO and IBO also along with IPhO. Prof. Savita did a good job of propagating the details to many and continued to train the students for the event.

A little-bit on History of IChO ( International Chemistry Olympiad )

The first IChO was founded and held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1968. The event has been held every year since then, with the exception of 1971. Every national team was comprised of six students. They had to solve four theoretical tasks.

Presently more than 70 countries are participating in IChO.

For 1971 it was not possible to agree on a location so the competition was cancelled. This organisational problem was solved diplomatically for the next three years: Soviet Union (1972), Bulgaria (1973) and Rumania (1974).
From 1975, Sweden, Yugoslavia and Belgium participated together with West Germany and Austria.

In the following years, the UNESCO became patron of the IChO and thus made participation internationally possible. Linz in Austria was the first non-socialistic location for the Chemistry Olympiad (1980).

The number of participating countries continuously increased. Whereas in Linz thirteen national participated, 21 delegations came to Frankfurt am Main in 1984: This was the first Olympiad which was carried out in West Germany. The former GDR hosted the event
in 1976 and 1989.

Presently Each delegation consists of up to four students and two mentors (one of them is designated as the head of the delegation or “head mentor”). A delegation may also include a handful of guests and scientific observers. Students must be under the age of 20 and must not be enrolled as regular students in any post-secondary education institution. The International Information Center of the International Chemistry Olympiad is based in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The competition consists of two examinations, a theoretical examination and a practical examination. Both have durations of up to 5 hours, and are held on separate days with the practical examination usually being before the theoretical examination. The theoretical examination has a value of 60 points and the practical examination has a value of 40 points. Each examination is evaluated independently from the other and the sum of the results of the examinations determines a participant’s overall result. A scientific jury, which is installed by the host country, suggests the tasks. The international jury, which consists of the 2 mentors from each of the participating countries, discusses the competition tasks and translates them into the language of their students’ preference.

Students receive the examinations translated into their languages of preference. It is the duty of the mentors to translate the examinations from English before they are given to the participants. After the examinations are held and evaluated by a committee appointed by the host country and before awards are presented, mentors discuss the evaluation of the exams with judges of the committee to assure fairness in their evaluation. Because the mentors review the examinations before they are given to participants, any communication between the mentors and the students is strictly forbidden prior to the completion of both exams, and the students are required to surrender any mobile phones and laptop computers to the organizer.
The syllabus of the competition contains subjects from several areas of chemistry, including organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and spectroscopy.

Though the majority of these subjects are included in most secondary school chemistry programs, for the most part, they are evaluated at a much deeper level and many may require a level of knowledge and understanding comparable to that of post-secondary education. In addition, the host country of each IChO issues a set of preparatory problems well in advance of the competition every year. These preparatory problems cover specific topics in considerable more depth than typical post-secondary education. Preparation for the International Chemistry Olympiad demands a high level of understanding and interest in chemistry and an outstanding ability to relate chemical subjects with one another as well as with the practical world.

All participants are ranked based on their individual scores and no official team scores are given. Gold medals are awarded to the top 10% of students, silver medals are awarded to the next 20% of students, and bronze medals are awarded to the next 30% of students. Honorable mentions are awarded to participants that do not win a medal but score a perfect problem in either the theoretical or the practical examination. One special award is given to the student that achieves the highest score overall. Two separate special awards are given to the students who get the best score in the theoretical and practical examinations. Occasionally, another special award is given to the top-scoring female student as well.
